GPs could soon be able to “prescribe” smartphone apps to their patients. The Health Secretary recently floated the idea and more detail is expected in the Spring about new approaches to using technology in this way.
Health-related apps can present a huge opportunity to provide engaging and patient centric utility – whether it’s about helping diabetes patients track their blood sugar levels or enabling allergy sufferers assess environmental risks.
With three-quarters of people using the internet for health research (according to a recent report by BUPA), it’s more important than ever for health providers and stakeholders to have a visible online presence that is accurate and reliable. For any company not engaging in the space there’s a danger that others will become the voice of authority.
Will be interesting to see the detail of how this proposed app “prescription” process might work. It seems telemedicine is going mainstream.
